D&D Ability Modifier Calculator

Every ability score in D&D 5e turns into a modifier, and that modifier is the number you actually roll with. This free ability modifier calculator does the conversion instantly: type a score from 1 to 30, or step it up and down, and you get the modifier plus a full reference table with your score highlighted. The formula is mod = ⌊(score − 10) ÷ 2⌋: subtract 10, halve it, round down. Handy while building a character, levelling up, or statting a monster at the table without doing the arithmetic in your head.

FAQ

How do you calculate an ability modifier in D&D 5e?
Subtract 10 from the ability score, divide by 2 and round down: mod = ⌊(score − 10) ÷ 2⌋. A 14 gives +2, a 15 also gives +2, and a 9 gives −1. The calculator does the rounding for you.
What is the ability modifier for a score of 20?
+5. Twenty is the usual cap for a player character, and the table on this page runs from 1 to 30 (+10) to cover monsters, magic items and effects that raise a score above 20.
Where do I use the ability modifier?
Almost everywhere: ability checks, skill checks, saving throws, attack rolls and damage, plus derived numbers like spell save DC and initiative. It is added to the d20 roll rather than the raw score.
