D&D 5e Proficiency Bonus Chart

Your proficiency bonus is the quiet number behind almost every d20 roll in D&D 5e — attacks, saving throws, skill checks and tool checks all lean on it. This free proficiency bonus calculator gives you the value for any character level from 1 to 20, with the whole progression laid out and your level highlighted. The formula is prof = 2 + ⌊(level − 1) ÷ 4⌋: it starts at +2 and steps up at levels 5, 9, 13 and 17. Monsters follow the same curve against their challenge rating, so the table works from both sides of the screen.

FAQ

How is the proficiency bonus calculated in D&D 5e?
prof = 2 + ⌊(level − 1) ÷ 4⌋. It starts at +2 at 1st level and goes up by 1 at levels 5, 9, 13 and 17, reaching +6 at 17th level and above.
What is the proficiency bonus at level 12?
+4. Levels 9–12 all share a +4 proficiency bonus; it rises to +5 at level 13. The full chart runs +2 (levels 1–4), +3 (5–8), +4 (9–12), +5 (13–16) and +6 (17–20).
Does proficiency bonus depend on class or multiclassing?
No — it depends only on your total character level. Every class uses the same progression, and when you multiclass you add all your class levels together and read the bonus for that total.
What is a monster's proficiency bonus by CR?
Monsters use the same progression against their challenge rating: +2 for CR 0–4, +3 for CR 5–8, +4 for CR 9–12, +5 for CR 13–16, +6 for CR 17–20, and it keeps climbing every four CR beyond that.
What does the proficiency bonus apply to?
Anything you are proficient in: attack rolls with weapons and spells, skill and tool checks, and saving throws from your class. It is added once — never twice — except when you have expertise, which doubles it.
